This lack of animal welfare worries me

SIR – I was very concerned to read of the 21 sheep killed when a trailer overturned (Worcester News, October 22).

There must be regulations governing transport of farm animals but I would have said that 80 sheep was a lot for that trailer to be carrying, even spread over two levels. Perhaps in the interests of welfare they were jammed in to stop them falling about!

Would we like to travel like that?

It didn't look as if the trailer had been properly, if at all, secured to the flatbed.

No doubt the farmer will be compensated for the 21 dead sheep, but I would like to know if he is being prosecuted for lack of animal welfare and/or the unroadworthiness of the vehicle.

It was fortunate it didn’t cause a much bigger accident.

I totally agree with you Roberta. I expect animals to have the same rights and welfare as people. Although, airline economy class for people probably isn’t as any better than the way these sheep were traveling! The farmer of this vehicle may well be prosecuted.
.
The new rules for the transportation came into force on 5 January 2007. This states that journey times of animal transportation are kept to a minimum; the animals are fit to travel; those handling animals are trained and competent; the vehicle and its loading/unloading facilities are designed, constructed and maintained to avoid injury and suffering; water, feed and rest are given to the animals as needed; and sufficient floor space and height is allowed.

And of course those animal rights activists who protested and eventually had the local abbortoirs closed meaning that live animals were having to travel longer distances without food and water.
