Really, so much for peace on earth...

SIR – I don’t understand why every year at Christmas the Worcester News publishes stories about hunt meets.

Hunting is illegal and publishing these stories only fuels the blood-lust activities of these socalled ‘traditionalists’. It makes me laugh to see photos of a jolly Santa Claus, brass bands playing Christmas carols and people enjoying food and drink in a celebration of the unfair, savage killing of an outnumbered animal.

So much for peace on earth and goodwill to all.

I’m glad the hunting ban is still in force and the free vote in Parliament should be changed to a public referendum to get a true image of what local people want.

Worcester is set in beautiful countryside but the vast amount of people I have spoken to agree with me on this one.

Time to dust off the rifle again then!

Croquill: come off it sir, your self- proclaimed blood thirsty way of life would never allow for dust to collect on your shot gun/blunderbus or rifle. Read your own postings on this subject.

I don’t understand it myself Simon… All this festive spirit with Santa, brass bands, food/drink and children stroking the hounds!? And at the end of the day, it is all in celebration of killing a ‘pest’. Bloody sick if you ask me!
.
What would they say if every year on Boxing Day we gather up the benefit scroungers (because lets face it, they are more of a pest to society than a fox killing the odd chicken) and set a pack of hounds onto them! And when we are all done with tackling that problem in society, we can all have a seven-course meal with a glass of Pimms in celebration.
.
Of course, this is just a metaphor and I clearly wouldn’t wish that treatment on any living human being. The same as I would not wish that treatment on any living animal.
.
By benefit scroungers, I mean people who are fit to work but don’t want to. With exception to those who cant physically work or those who are made redundant in these hard times.
.
Also, the reference to the meal and Pimms was sarcasm for the snobbery, which is indulged on such a horrific affair.
.
(Thought I’d better justify all my points before someone slates me for expressing them).

O, Such a terrible thing to see and do on Boxing day and joy upon joy all those horse race meetings cancel .No nasty whipping of those unfortunate horses. By those greasy jockeys to help to keep those greedy owners , trainers and book makers in pocket. And appease those appalling balling followers of this sport After all if these poor animals do not do the business they’ll finish up on plates in some Belgian restaurant. To feed fat face anti what ever people.

tub_thumper, I have no problem with what you have written, except Pimms in Winter?
That's not the done thing at all.

To answer the original letter I can only assume that the reason the article was published was the large crowd who always turn out to support the Hunt on these occasions. Surely it is not unreasonable to expect a local paper to report when a large crowd of local people turn out to support something.
What the paper did not do was to make any judgement for or against hunting.

There are bigger gatherings of people that happen all year round that get little mention, the WN is a bit right wing and biased towards the countryside landowners I suppose.
Cap doffing and all that is quite evident in this case. The hunt followers are deluded at best and unhinged psychopaths at worse. Hunting is no better than bear baiting or dog fighting and should be treated as such. It has no place in a civilised country.
Completely pointless and extremely cruel to foxes and the horses, many of these get seriously hurt jumping etc, of course this doesn't get much mention.

Ahem. Of course I got it. I was playing along.
My sense of humour has never been too subtle to be spotted before. I must be losing my touch.

Fair enough New Kid. The WN didn't make any judgement about the subject. But clearly turning up on the day and taking 'lovely' photo's of festive jovialities amongst a bunch of, ahem, ‘people’, can only fuel the publics interest into questioning the ban. How come the WN never reported the successful sabotage of a hunt in a jovial way? Instead, they probably reported the use of hunt propaganda, such as anti-hunt protesters spraying unknown chemicals into the hounds’ eyes and the criminal damage done to the hunt staff’s Land Rovers. No mention here of the animal life that has just been saved…

There is no mention of horses with broken legs, pets savaged, trespass, disruption of traffic and illegal blocking of highways, rudeness, illegal hunting and all the other things these hunts are involved in .
No, the WN is the huntsmans friend. I have noticed that the local papers tend to be on the wrong side in contentious issues, usually siding with the authorities or in this case the hunt, that is until the other side gets the better of the situation, the press know when to jump ship. Hopefully they will be reporting all the misdemeanour's of the local hunt from now on?

If they report on the misdemeanours of the the local Hunt I trust that they will also report on any misdemeanours of the anti hunting faction.
Surely reporting should be fair and unbiased.

But they don’t report on the misdemeanours of the hunt do they? The fact of the matter is that the hunt is bad. But because of ‘tradition’ people become blinkered to the facts and ignore them. People just see an event and support it without actually doing the research. If the WN published the facts of the hunt (as mentioned by pudniw_gib from Malvern), then local folk will be more educated. Of course, there are illegal activities of anti-hunt protesters. But my question is this: “Which group committed the illegal activities first?” Without the hunt there would be no protesters.

If the Hunt are committing illegal acts then give the evidence to the police.
If they are committing acts which are legal but you dissaprove of then you may campaign against them as long as you stay within the law yourself.

The wont do anything – they support the hunt. And even if they tried, there are too many deliberate loopholes in the ban to achieve anything anyway. What about the time when a pack of hounds ran through a quite residential housing estate on the outskirts of Droitwich? These hounds were running up and down the road and trespassing in people gardens. The hunt master said they were in control so the police did nothing. The residents didn’t seem to think they were in control… As usual, nothing gets done.
.
But you get protesters standing in the way of the hunt and they get arrested. Since when did preventing someone from committing an illegal act actually become illegal itself? The police just use the “Breach of the peace” and “Disorderly Conduct” excuse even though most anti’s I have met are peaceful and law abiding.

Tub_thumper : Well said!

Ripping apart a living, conscious salient creature that is incapable of hurting adults (babies and children you make sure are safe) or supporting those practices is blood thirst.
