SIR – I am writing to warn people of the dangers of Chinese lanterns.

We, as farmers, together with other livestock keepers are very concerned at the damage these lanterns can cause.

While the paper parts quickly disintegrate, the thin wires remain and may land in a field eventually to be baled up in hay which is then fed to livestock.

We know of two animals who have died in terrible pain.

We are very concerned about the fire risk, too.

Suppose a Chinese lantern was to fall on a thatched cottage roof?

The Women’s Food and Farming Union has brought out a petition to ban Chinese lanterns, which we and many other livestock keepers are pleased to support.

You can find it on their website if you would like to support this cause.

Our plea to you all is to please think very carefully about the impact they may have on other people’s property before you consider using Chinese lanterns.
