All hunting is cruel? You can’t prove it

Sir – I have followed the debate on hunting in the Worcester News letters pages with interest and I wonder if I might make a comment.

Surely the issue at the heart of the hunting debate is animal cruelty?

Cruelty is generally legally defined as deliberately causing unnecessary suffering. Although there is a law against such cruelty – the Wild Mammals (Protection) Act – it only covers certain actions and exempts hunting.

Given that no one can sensibly argue that there is a right to be cruel, does it not make sense that this law is extended so that all such cruelty to wild mammals be made illegal however it is caused.

I should have no right to be cruel but, conversely, people should have no right to prevent me undertaking activities that are not cruel.

It’s interesting that anti-hunt organisations such as the League Against Cruel Sports actually oppose such a legislative approach that would have cruelty at its very core. This is because they are fully aware that they cannot show that all hunting is cruel.

Hmmm, it only exempts hunting so it doesn’t cause a divide between country folk.
.
The truth of the matter, Giles, is that you thrive on a loophole to justify your beliefs. What happened to good old morals?
.
I still can’t understand why people think that it ok to kill and outnumbered animal. I have used metaphors in previous posts about humans being chased and outnumbered in the same way, as a fox would be. Would you consider this to be a cruel act on a human – a fellow human being chased by animals much larger than himself then being ripped to shreds? Would a human instantly die? No, I think it would take a while. He could have his arms and legs ripped off in a car accident and could still be living until the emergency services got to him – but in a state of perpetual agony. Would this be considered cruel if a fellow human received these life-threatening injuries from a pack of slavering beasts in the name of sport?

Hi Tub_thumper! your comment doesn't actually address the points made in my letter. Maybe you should spend less time thumping the old tub and more time reading and digesting what other people have said?

Well said Giles, it's very hard to hold a serious debate on hunting when the opposition refuse to stick to the subject.
