Tell us when the hunts are taking place

Sir – The hunting season is fast approaching and over the coming months wild animals will be terrorised in the countryside to satisfy a small minority’s desire to chase and kill for sport. In an ideal world hunts would be preparing for a season of trail and drag hunting but we know the reality is very different.

Sadly, a number of hunts are continuing to hunt as they traditionally did before the Hunting Act was passed.

However, with almost 200 convictions under the Act it’s only a matter of time before those who think they can ride roughshod over the law will be brought to justice.

Our professional observers will be out in force this season, monitoring the activities of hunts which are believed to be breaking the law.

In order to be more efficient we need information as to where hunts are hunting, where they are meeting and when they are going out.

If you have information on your local hunts’ activities or meet cards we would urge you to pass this on to the League Against Cruel Sports so we can assist the police in enforcing the law.

The vast majority of the convictions under the act are nothing to do with what most people would call hunting.
This act is being used to prosecute poachers who were already breaking existing laws.
For example in 2010 of the 49 cases brought under the act 13 were found not guilty and of the remaining cases only one involved a Hunt registered with the Council of Hunting Associations.
Poaching was illegal before the Act and would continue to be illegal without it.
The Hunting Act is a piece of legislation that has comprehensively failed and these statistics hold a mirror up to that fact.
But what the act does do is allow animal rights vigilantes to make allegations against hunts and waste Police, CPS and Court time, often at huge cost to taxpayers.

Well-said Mr Duckworth! I fully support your cause.
.
New Kid: I was wondering if it would be you to make the first defensive comment. I don’t understand why you think it’s a waste of Police time to make an example of those who hurt and kill wild animals that are merely just trying to survive?
.
The letters page has been an interesting read of late: Badgers may spread bovine TB. The answer? Kill them. Seagulls crapping over people’s cars? The answer? Kill them. Foxes kill the odd chicken. The answer? Kill them!
.
It seems to me, that humans kill any animal that gets in their way. They are ‘vermin’ because they are just merely going about their own business. Humans also like to kill each other, but that is another argument. Humans don’t kill other fellow humans because they are old, or they spread disease. No. We nurse them back to health and continue to overpopulate this very planet. Who is the biggest vermin in all of this, dare I ask?

Not surprised to see your comment Tub-thumper.
But perhaps you might like to think carefully before you comment next time.
Firstly why do we need to spend huuge amounts of time and money to pass an act that results in one prosecution in 12 months? Could the time and money have been spent in a better way that might actually have benefited animal welfare? We don't need more anti poaching laws the ones we have are already sufficient. The hunting act has not saved the life of a single fox. In fact it has often been suggested that more foxes are now being killed than before this politically motivated act was passed.
Badgers with TB what did I say was the only real answer - Vaccination.
Gulls (not Seagulls as they live inland) what is the answer - Dont leave rubbish lying around to feed them.
The real reason for this letter could well be a desperate attempt to increase the profile of an organisation whose membership numbers are dropping drastically. Numbers are down from 18000 members in 1995 to 4500 and dropping. They are currently selling off their assets in order to finance their campaigns. This compares with the Countryside Alliance having 100,000 members to which you can add another 130,000 members of BASC. Perhaps Joe Duckworth should question just who is the tiny minority.

My interest in sporting cruelty is more mundane.
Horse racing, greyhound racing, dog fighting, pigeon racing all are cruel as far as I am concerned.
To lump fox hunting with these truly cruel sports is ludicrous.
Who within the Evening News hierarchy allowed the publication of a none too subtle political message?
Shows what a bunch of left wing pinkos run the rag.
