I’ve so many questions about the Hive...

SIR – I’ve heard it said/implied that the Hive in Worcester is inspired by the Malvern Hills.

This much I can understand, they have been inspiring people for as long as people have existed.

I do not understand, however, why the Hive is so bright.

Yes, the hills can appear golden to us dreamers in a certain light but never blindingly so.

I cannot help but wonder how this building was passed by the planning department when small items such as signage on buildings – such as that on Belle Vue Terrace in Malvern – is criticised by some.

I do not understand, either, why the opportunity was not taken to gather solar energy from the building, with or without the golden tiling.

Especially as one workman commented to me that working on the roof during mild sunshine was like being in front of a heater on full blast on the hottest day of the year. Surely this ability of the gold tiles to magnify the sun’s rays could have been used to the advantage of the partners who funded the building.

I am also concerned that there may be pedestrian/vehicle accidents caused by the reflected glare.

The cost is astronomical – to be borne by Worcestershire people – and unnecessarily so whether in times of recession or upward mobility.

I do hope the overpowering building will be worth the money when it is open and remains in use by the people of the city for many years to come.

My final concern is for the students at the University of Worcester. When I studied I took every available opportunity to use the library and facilities during spare moments but now this will be almost impossible.

Those who do will cause further chaos on the old bridge in and out of St John’s and the city.

"I’ve heard it said/implied that the Hive in Worcester is inspired by the Malvern Hills". Where did you hear this exactly?

Not sure why you would think this will be 'almost impossible '- what a strange thing to say! - many of the students will live on the new campus or in the city anyway, and those who are studying in the old uni only have to walk across Sabrina Bridge. As there will be almost nowhere to park that won't cost an arm and a leg I can't see many students clogging up the bridge with cars!

When will people get it into their narrow-minded heads that the gold will patinate. It will mellow and will not be as garish. Find something more useful and permanent to moan about.

never Maggie because most of the old crones who can be bothered to write this sort of moaning diatribe are dense.
