PM, what about the ordinary travellers?

SIR – The state of the railways in this country is sub-standard to many other countries – overcrowded, dirty and unreliable, a total disgrace for the price of the tickets.

Yet the Government is pressing ahead with spending £32 billion for a high speed rail line that will mainly benefit the wealthy business travellers.

The railway network 20 years after privatistation suffers from a chronic lack of investment despite the extorionate fares being charged – 10 times more than in some European countries.

If this Government has £32 billion to invest on railways then there are are more effective ways to help passengers – longer trains, extra tracks and better toilets for a start. But David Cameron isn’t interested in ordinary travellers. Like so much of the Government, his only thoughts are for the rich.

Business travellers on HS2 mean less passengers on the airlines and on the West Coast Main Line.

This means there is more rail capacity.

We need more lines for trains to run on.
