Could this idea put an end to crime?

SIR – Having to pay for scrap by cheque is a good idea, but why stop there? If we abolish cash then all purchases and sales would have a bank record.

Not only does this make the catching of wrong-doers easier, caught or not caught criminals would still be liable to pay income tax.

Crime may possibly go out of fashion just because of the paperwork involved.

I am sorry but quite a large section of the Scrappy's around don't belong to the business clubs, don't pay tax & Insurance, don't have bank accounts, couldn't sign a cheque if asked, and will continue to steal scrap. The only way to combat this is to have stricter control on the Foundries who buy this scrap,(so someone is accountable for buying stolen scrap, with perhaps a threat of a prison sentence) and also confiscate the illegal scrappy's lorries.

Hi Jabbadad. A fair idea but i think you missed the point. If (all cash) was abolished then (everybody) would have to use cheque, credit transfer, bank cards, etc. This would leave a bank record (because there is no cash). If you think about it, crime of any kind would become a risky business. Having no cash means you have to use a traceable transaction. Caught or not, criminals would still have to pay tax on there illegal income.

Well no I didn't miss the point.
The BLACK ECONOMY has flourished for many years, and these weak measures, described by the MP involved in preparing the Bill, admitted that it was not as ROBUST as it perhaps could have been. So with this so-called Bill we will still see the same number of Scrappy's around who have never played by the rules, and still don't/ wont play by the rules.
This Bill is just to make the Government look pro-active, but has little real life worth.
