SIR – George Cowley is quite right that it was fortunate that no jockeys were killed at the Cheltenham races (Worcester News, March 22).

It is, however, their choice to race. The horses are not given that luxury.

If a jockey breaks a leg it is mended. If a horse breaks a leg it gets shot.

An innocent animal is killed so that large sums of money can be made in bets.

If you care about the welfare of horses, please don’t bet on the Grand National next month.
