SIR – I read the other day that there’s a town in France that is giving households which can sustain them two chickens each.

They think it will save them money because the chickens would eat the scraps of waste food and the council wouldn’t have to send a lorry round to collect.

In return for the scraps the hens will give eggs. Isn’t this a good idea and couldn’t our council adopt it? Then everybody wins.
