SIR – There is one thing I sincerely hope that Roy Hodgson can do for England and that is to get Wayne Rooney to sing our national anthem when the teams are lined out on the pitch.
Last Monday night the England and French teams were presented to the world.
The TV cameras panned along the England team while our national anthem was being played and we saw that the whole team were singing God Save the Queen.
Then the camera panned across to where Rooney was sitting... and there was nothing.
Now I know he was starting a two-match ban, but I have never seen him sing the national anthem before games.
Surely if you have pride in yourself, your country, and respect for your team-mates and fans alike, there can be no higher accolade than playing for your country, so why not sing the national anthem?
