If only modern aircraft had been available

SIR – The bombing of Dresden was very wrong as George Cowley said, but so too were the raids over London, Coventry and Liverpool by Nazi Germany.

Had modern aircraft been available to our air crews in the 1940s more selective bombing would have been possible, and 55,573 Bomber Command airmen would not have lost their lives either.

What a bizarre argument - if we had modern aircraft then so would Germany and Japan. It is entirely possible that even more (civilian) lives would have been lost. 'What-if' history is best left to fiction writers. It cannot be used to justify or explain historic events.

CJH: Do'nt get a bee in your bonnet, War is War.
Everybody goes on about Dresden, so what!.
The City of Wielun in Poland, on the 1st of September1939, German bombers destroyed 75% of all buildings.
KIlling1200 civilians, only59% of Dresden was destroyed. The German City Bochum was the only City to have 80% destroyed.
Not Many people know that.

Estimated deaths, Civilians from 40 to 50 Million Dead.
Total Military,22 to 25 Million dead.

It really annoys me, when the Progressives in this Country go and on about Dresden.

Who caused all these deaths? Germany, and CJH- my Father was one.

There are no bees in my bonnet. They are all firmly attached to yours. Please don't keep preaching to us about how terrible war is. We know. And you are not the only person (tragic though it is for you personally) who has lost someone because of it. I was addressing the point made by the writer regarding 'what if' history.
