That really was a magnificent show

SIR – Even in such gloomy and desperate times, Britain and its people have shown the world how to put on a show and a party.

The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games was a truly great spectacle, magnificent beyond any doubt, and I’m sure the rest of the watching world would have sat open-eyed at such splendour.

Britain is at the front of the queue when organising big events and putting the show on the big stage.

Its people should be proud that even though present times are extremely grim for many families, at times like this, we rally round and bond as one to show the world that Britain is still great.
