AT the weekend the people of Worcestershire will join the rest of the country in remembering those who have lost their lives in combat.

This year Armistice Day falls on Remembrance Sunday, making the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month all the more poignant. As usual, communities will gather around war memorials throughout towns and villages to remember those who gave their tomorrows for our todays.

They include:

WORCESTER - Public service at Worcester Cathedral on Sunday at 10am followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial, including a two minutes silence at 11am.

At the end of the service, the Civic Party will leave and proceed to the saluting base in Vine Street via Abbot Reginald’s Gateway and Market Square. PERSHORE - Veterans and honoured guests are invited to join pupils at Pershore High School for their annual service today (Thursday) from 10am.

Tomorrow Lieutenant Commander Jasen Webster will represent the Canadian High Commission at the Service of Remembrance at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pershore Cemetery. This service is traditionally held on Armistice Day but as Remembrance Sunday falls on November 11 this year, it has been moved to November 9.

Following the suggestion of the RBL, the names of the fallen will be read out at the Armistice ceremony and in the Abbey at the Remembrance Service next year, thereafter alternating between these two events.

On Sunday, the parade of veterans and voluntary organisations will meet at the leisure centre at 10am, ready to set off at 10.15am.

A service of remembrance will take place at Pershore Abbey at 10.45am, but people are advised to take their seats by 10.30am. A wreath-laying ceremony will also take place inside the Abbey.

After the service, the parade will march back towards its starting point accompanied by the Bretforton Silver Band and a salute will be taken by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mr David Williams-Thomas outside the town hall.

Prior to the march, a wreath laying ceremony will also take place at the memorial garden in Abbey Park by students of Pershore High School.
