Hylton Road remains closed Hylton Road remains closed

HYLTON Road in Worcester is still shut this morning despite hopes it would be open in time for rush hour.

Yesterday, highways bosses at Worcestershire County Council said the road could be open for early commuters, provided weather conditions in the county and elsewhere upstream did not worsen.

However, closed signs remain in place at either end of the road this morning and traffic is still being diverted along Henwick Road.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said checks were conducted at 5.20am and a surge of water from upstream had caused the road to remain submerged.

He said a pump was still at the scene and highways staff were continuing to monitor the situation, but it was not yet known when the road would re-open.

That's all pretty hopeless after all that time and money was spent on flood defences. Looks to me like they didn't have enough pumping capacity as I've only seen one weedy looking portable pump in operation.

Has Hylton Road got any permanent pumps?

Was it not just a bund built to protect the road/properties from the river overflowing?

The flooding at the moment is rain water trapped behind the bund, bit of a design failure?
