Worcester News reader comes to rescue of metal thieves

A DISABLED couple say their faith in humanity has been restored following a generous donation from a Worcester woman.

As previously reported in your Worcester News, Lewis and Amanda Bishop, who both use mobility scooters, were left prisoners in their home in Selsey Close, Warndon, Worcester, when thieves stole a metal access ramp from outside their front door.

It has meant Mrs Bishop has been trapped indoors for the past two weeks as she has been unable to take her scooter outside.

But the couple have now regained their freedom thanks to an early Christmas present from reader Laura Newbery. The 29- year-old of St John’s, Worcester, told your Worcester News that she wanted to help because she was touched by the Bishops’ plight. Miss Newbery said: “When I read the story, I just thought what a horrible thing for someone to do, especially right before Christmas. It’s meant to be a time of goodwill.

“I had this ramp I no longer had a use for, so I thought I would offer it to Mr and Mrs Bishop. It turns out it was a perfect fit. Being able to help them has made my Christmas.”

Miss Newbery, who works for Safer Worcester – a partnership committed to reducing incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour in the city – has also armed the couple with SmartWater to protect the ramp from theft.

Mr Bishop thanked Miss Newbery for her kindness.

He said: “Now I know Amanda can get out and about. She’s been stuck in the house ever since the ramp was stolen. It’s restored our faith in human nature.”
