DRIVERS are urged to take care on Worcestershire's roads tonight and tomorrow after predictions of heavy rainfall.

Showers are set to hit the county from 8pm and may turn to sleet and snow overnight, according to Met Office forecasts.

Temperatures are due to plummet to a minimum of -3 and remain sub zero until 10am tomorrow, with a high chance of icy conditions on the roads.

Worcestershire County Council's fleet of 31 gritting vehicles will be heading out during the night, depending on the timing and intensity of the forecast rain.

Jon Fraser, Worcestershire County Council's highways manager is urging motorists to ensure they drive with caution.

He said: "Met Office forecasts suggest that tonight and tomorrow morning are set to present some of the trickiest driving conditions we've seen this winter.

"Our gritters will be heading out to treat the roads throughout Worcestershire, however, we will be monitoring conditions and working closely with the Met Office to make sure we send out our gritting teams at the best times to treat the roads, ensuring that heavy rain and sleet does not wash away our grit treatments.

"It is extremely important that motorists please remember to slow down and leave extra space between yourself and the vehicle in front to allow for extra stopping time in icy conditions. Gritting is very effective, but it is not a miracle solution, and I urge all drivers to temper their driving according to the conditions. This will be especially important throughout the night and during tomorrow morning's rush hour."
