A SERVICE set up by a Malvern woman aimed at reducing the number of disposable nappies at landfill sites has been praised by Worcestershire County Council.

The non-profit Nappy Advisory Service, which was set up by Penny Broderick, is now expanding across Worcestershire.

She said: "Due to the demand, I have put together a team of advisers so that the service can now be offered across the county.

"We now have people based in Hagley and Kidderminster and Worcester and Ledbury and I am hoping to train more people. We can do demonstrations at any ante-natal group across Worcestershire and can show parents how to mix and match products easily to suit their requirements.

"We have helped more than 100 families to switch to using washable nappies, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds. Anyone can switch to cloth or more eco-friendly disposable options. Even using just one cloth nappy a day saves 365 each year from landfill."

The service has now been given the thumbs up by the county council.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, cabinet member for environment, said: "This is an amazing scheme which has the potential to directly impact on the amount and type of waste across the county.

"Approximately six percent of Worcestershire's unrecyclable kerbside waste is disposable nappies which equates to nearly half a million pounds in landfill tax per year."
