A GUIDED riverside walk for people aged over 50 will take place in Worcester on Sunday.

The circular three-and-a-half mile route, which starts from the University of Worcester Arena at 10.30am and takes in the Sabrina and Diglis bridges, will celebrate Silver Sunday – an annual day of fun and free activities for older people across the UK.

Families, friends and carers of the over 50s are also invited to participate in the event, which aims to promote a healthy, active and independent lifestyle.

Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Worcester U3A, Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Worcester City Council and the University of Worcester have helped organise the Sabrina Steps walk.

Bronwen Fragiotta, of Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said: “The event will be an opportunity to meet new people, find out about walking groups and get motivated.

“Walking is good for you and doing it regularly has been shown to have significant health benefits.

“On the Sabrina Steps route you can walk, talk, laugh, learn and enjoy the views.”

Stephen Brewster, director of the Sports Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire, added: “Walking is such a fantastic way of keeping fit and active regardless of age and the joy of this walk is that, although it is focusing on the over 50s, friends and family are welcome and encouraged to come along and be part of the day.”

Susie Hart, head of recreation and sport strategy at the University of Worcester, said: “It is our shared ambition to have Worcester recognised nationally as an age-friendly city, offering numerous community-focused, active-ageing programmes.

“Silver Sunday is set to become another successful social engagement opportunity.”

Walkers, who can complete the route at their own pace, are advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and to bring a packed lunch.
