AN UPTON man has labelled his pothole-plagued road a "disgrace".

Jack Payne, 78, of Hydefields, claims the uneven surface is damaging residents' cars and creating a trip hazard for elderly people walking to their homes.

Fortis Living, which is responsible for maintaining the road, however stated potholes were filled in at the end of last year and further improvement works will take place in the 2015 to 2016 financial year.

Mr Payne, who has lived in Hydefields his entire life, said: "The road is in a terrible state.

"There are about 50 potholes and some are very wide and deep.

"Everybody on the street is complaining.

"It is playing havoc with car tyres and I know one of my neighbours has had problems with his suspension.

"Elderly residents, including one with a bad ankle and another who is due to have a hip operation, don't want to walk along the surface.

"The whole incident has left me angry and incensed."

Hydefields is classed as an "unadopted road", which means responsibility for its maintenance lies with the landowner - in this case Fortis Living - rather than Worcestershire County Council.

A spokeswoman at Fortis Living said: “We carried out work to repair potholes at Hydefields in Upton towards the end of last year and we are planning to complete further re-surfacing work in the 2015 to 2016 financial year.

“In the meantime if there are any issues we would encourage people to give our maintenance team a call so we are aware of the problem as there are currently no complaints logged.

“While we are waiting for work to be done we can re-visit the road and repair any potholes that have emerged since our initial visit.”

Worcestershire County Council, which is responsible for maintaining the majority of roads in the region, similarly urged residents to report potholes or other defects on its highways.

Members of the public can do so by calling Worcestershire Hub on 0845 607 2005, visiting worcestershire.gov.uk/reportit or by using the county council smartphone app.
