STEP back in time this Christmas by visiting the Elgar Birthplace Museum for some festive entertainment from the composer's childhood.

In a time before TV and cinema, magic lanterns were a popular pastime for Victorians of all ages.

This Saturday (Dec 20) Spencer and Sons Magic Lanternists will be bringing their magic lanterns to the museum to perform short circus-themed Christmas shows for families.

There will be shows throughout the afternoon for adults keen to discover the old-world charm of magic lanterns and enjoy the spirit of Christmas.

Antique slides will also be used providing an unique opportunity to see an authentic magic lantern show with musical accompaniment.

The shows at the museum in Lower Broadheath will take place from 1pm.

Children will also be able to make their own magic lanterns and slides, allowing them the opportunity to perform their own shows at home.

The museum will have a Victorian Craft Corner where families will have the chance to fill in any gaps on their Christmas tree by making traditional Yuletide decorations and tree ornaments.

All these fun activities are free with museum admission, and suitable for children five years and older.
