IT IS not just their bright pink hair which has been getting the New Inn Spartans noticed - their rallying cry for donations has seen them net over £10,000 for charity.

Their eye-catching pink Mohicans have been turning heads and prompting people dig deep into their pockets to generously donate to St Richard's Hospice.

Most of the 12-strong team had their hair bleached blonde first then died pink back in November and have been holding charity events at The New Inn, Ombersley Road, Claines.

Landlord Keith Newby said he was proud that they had managed to raise so much money for such a good cause.

He said: "I'm chuffed to bits.

"We are all over the moon to raise £10,000 especially as we initially said if we can get £1,100 or £1,200 we'd be happy.

"We've been blown away by people's generosity especially as we're doing it in the run up to Christmas.

"In the first week we managed to raise about £4,000, we just didn't realise how much people would support us."

Marston's has given £500 and £120 has been raised on the Just Giving site but the majority of money has come from regulars and customers amazed at the Spartans' efforts.

Mr Newby took part in the London Marathon this year for the charity raising just over £6,000 as well as held Tash for Cash during which a team of brave regulars had their moustaches waxed off.

He said he was motivated to raise money for St Richard's after friends had received care at the hospice on Wildwood Drive.
