IT is official – Worcester loves a glass of chenin blanc.
Bottles of the Loire valley white wine are more popular in Worcester than any other city in the UK.
The finding has been made by Laithwaite’s Wine, a home-delivery wine merchant, by analysing sales data from more than 400,000 customers.
Sauvignon Blanc came out as the nation’s most popular wine, with Chardonnay and Merlot coming second and third respectively.
The company has pulled together the data into a ‘Grape Britain’ wine map, highlighting regional variations in taste.
Beth Willard, wine buyer at Laithwaite’s Wine, said: “It’s great to be able to draw up the first ‘Grape Britain’ wine map.
“What it shows is that, while Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay have a huge nationwide appeal, we are actually a nation of wine connoisseurs, with our own unique tastes and preferences, and a willingness to be adventurous in our selection.”
The top 10 of grape varieties across the UK are:
1. Sauvignon Blanc
2. Chardonnay
3. Merlot
4. Cabernet Sauvignon
5. Shiraz
6. Grenache
7. Pinot Noir
8. Tempranillo
9. Pinot Grigio
10. Malbec
