WORCESTER'S two peregrine falcon chicks have finally been named.

A total of 260 entries were sent in to the competition, which was run in conjunction with your Worcester News and the national charity the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

After much deliberation, the names Chimes and Spiral were picked for the two chicks, which have caused such a stir in the city.

Ross Lawford, peregrine falcon officer for the RSPB, said: "We had some really interesting and creative names come through and I was thrilled with the response to the competition. These two names really stood out to us though."

Twelve-year-old Sadie Norman, who lives off London Road, Worcester, chose the name Spiral, which has been given to the male chick. "I didn't expect to win," said the Christopher Whitehead Language College pupil.

"I chose the name because of the spire and the chicks connection to Worcester."

Pat Jinks, of St Peter's, Worcester, suggested Chimes, which has been given to the female chick.

The 77-year-old said: "When I was thinking about the names I could give them I thought that the birds flew towards the cathedral.

"I thought of bells so that was the first one, and then I thought about them chiming, so I wrote that down too."

The pair were presented with a framed print of one of the peregrine falcon chicks and an RSPB Handbook of British Birds.

Other names suggested in the competition included Lea and Perrin, Posh and Pecks, Andrew and Dean, and Hungry and Greedy.

  • The chicks haven't been in their nest over the last few days, but just in case they return you can watch them live via webcam here.
