TWO lucky children from Worcester and Hereford have bagged themselves the chance to be mascots in a celebrity football match this weekend.

Bethany Wise, aged 12, and football-mad Alfie Thompson, aged four, will be treated like stars at the football match between Hollyoaks actors and Worcester Allstars tomorrow.

Bethany, of Merriman’s Hill, Rainbow Hill, Worcester, and Alfie, from Hereford, will keep the football kit they will wear on the day after winning a competition run by Wyvern FM to become the mascots.

The match, at Worcester City’s St George’s Lane ground, is expected to draw a crowd of around 3,000 spectators to raise money for the Leukaemia CARE association.

Wyvern FM’s Hayley Duce said: “The response was great and there will be a few disappointed children out there but sadly we could only choose two winners.”

The match will see Worcester Allstars — a team of Worcester stars that includes breakfast DJ Paul Kershaw and Worcester City chairman Dave Boddy — take on a team of actors from Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

Leukaemia sufferer Alfie was delighted to have won, and although he is due for treatment on the morning of the match his mother, Amanda said: “He’s really excited at this opportunity. He can’t wait for the big day.”

Bethany said she was excited about the day.

“I like playing football and I watch Hollyoaks with my sister so I’m really excited to be mascot and I can’t wait to run out onto the pitch,“ she said.

Her father, Gareth Wise, said: “Her grandfather was really ill while the voting took place and sadly he has since passed away but he was keen for her to win as he knew she’d do a great job. “ Gates open at 1.30 pm with the match kicking off at 3pm.

Tickets, £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s, are available on raise4leukeamia.org.uk, by calling 0845 521 3456 or at Worcester City Football Club, Bushwackers and Sin.
