Jump on board for fun Titanic party

THE 10-course meal enjoyed by passengers aboard the ill-fated Titanic will be recreated for an end-of-summer party at a Worcestershire pub.

Staff from the Swan in Birlingham, near Pershore, have turned a copy of the original menu from the evening the ship went down into a buffet-style spread.

Partygoers will enjoy canapies with rum punch or sparkling cocktails on arrival followed by a choice of Duck a la Orange, seafood platter, lamb chops, roast beef and chateau and lyonnaise potatoes.

Trifle and autumn fruits creme brulee will be among the deserts along with cheese and mints.

Memorabilia from the “unsinkable” ship, which hit an iceberg and sank during its maiden voyage in 1912, will be on display.

Landlord Nick Carson said guests would enjoy a realistic atmosphere with live music and an after dinner speech by local actor Bob Clarke before warning bells would be rung to signal the disaster.

He said: “All the people who come can jump into two lifeboats and have their photos taken and the money raised from that will go to the RNLI.

“We thought it would be much more fun for people to dress up properly.”

Tickets for the event on Thursday, September 4, cost £20 and are available by calling The Swan, Church Street, on 01386 750485.

Not wishing to be prudish but can recreating an event where 1517 people died be "fun". I like the idea of the menu but ringing the bell and jumping into lifeboats? Hmm not sure on this one - am I wrong?

I agree that having people jump into lifeboats to have their picture taken does seem to make trivial the plight of all those that lost their lives on that fatefull night.

Although it has been 96 years since the disaster there are still many grieved relatives alive that will frown on such an event.

I have no objection with all the other aspects of the event apart from this one, have lifeboats by all means, but do people need to sit in them smiling for the camera, I doubt there were many smiles originally.

Could not a percentage of the ticket cost be donated to the RNLI instead of the money raised from the photo's?

I do expect a Titanic menagerie in 4 years time commemorating 100 years since the disaster, and hopefully many thousands of pounds will be raised for good causes around the globe, but all such events must be aware of the fine line between good taste and exploitation of a relatively recent disaster.

I do however hope that the evening at the Swan is successful and that everyone present may spare a moments thought for the lost souls of the Titanic.

On the contrary, I hope like hell that the night is a total disaster and it hit's the pockets of those sick people organising it, very hard indeed. It should be boycotted and nobody should turn up because those who do go to it indicate that they have just as tiny brains as those organising it.
I note that tickets cost £20 but the indications are that only the money raised from clownish jumping into a boat will go to the RNLI.
Why don't they go the whole hog and work out a similar celebration for the WW1 Battle of the Somme - they are the sort of idiots who would, is nothing sacred to them?

I'm with Alan2 on this - all the way!

No - nothing IS sacred anymore..even the sacred Green Belt has been "donated" to the gypsies!

Fun? Party? Titanic? Good grief, what the heck are they thinking? Of all the insensitive, stupid, pointless half-brained ideas to come up with, this has to be one of the worst. And what will this 'realistic atmosphere' be? Hundreds of people terrified, children screaming, whole families drowning together, people fighting for life boats and survival? And trying to justify it by making donations to the RNLI - where will all the profit from the food and drink go? Landlord's pocket!
I wish I could say what I really think about this, but am sure that Murray would have to censor me quite severely!
