A RETIRED pilot from Bromyard has appealed for help in finding his gold wedding ring in time for his 50th wedding anniversary.
Richard Smith, aged 72, was taking his weekly stroll to buy the Sunday papers at McColls convenience store, Bromyard Bypass, when the ring fell off his finger.
He said: “The shop is about 300 yards away from where I live and it always disturbs me about how much litter there is.
“I always put my wedding ring on my little finger because it’s a bit tight and when I picked up a stray packet of crisps or something it must have slipped off into the grass.”
Mr Smith, who lives just behind Whitegates rest home with his 71-year-old wife Helen, placed a notice in the window of a Malvern newsagent for anyone who may own a metal detector and would be prepared to help him in his search.
“I would pay for their expenses to get to Bromyard and buy them a few beers,” he said.
The ring which was bought 35 years ago by Mr Smith, has proved a valuable asset over the years.
“I am a retired British Airways captain and I wanted a ring so that the stewardesses knew I was married,” he said. “As far as they were concerned the crew were fair game.”
Mr and Mrs Smith will celebrate their golden wedding in October and hope to have the ring back in plenty of time for then.
Anyone who owns a metal detector or can help Mr Smith in his search can call him on 01885 488964.
