A WORCESTER pedestrian died of multiple injuries after being hit by a car near the brow of a bridge on an unlit country road, an inquest was told.
HGV driver Roy Timmins was crossing the B4114 Nuneaton Road at Hartshill in north Warwickshire on Wednesday, December 17 last year. He was on his way to use shower facilities at the nearby Tarmac depot during an overnight stop.
Warwickshire coroner Sean McGovern recorded an accidental death verdict on 54-year-old Mr Timmins, of Lilac Avenue, Tolladine.
The resumed inquest at Leamington was told that since the accident the speed limit on the stretch of road – described by Mr Timmins’ colleague David Broster (correct) as a “very dangerous place to cross” had been reduced from 60mph to 30mph.
The coroner said the driver of the Peugeot 205 that hit Mr Timmins was facing criminal charges relating to the condition of the vehicle but there were no allegations regarding his driving.
Accident investigator PC Colin Humphreys told the inquest that mechanical defects to the Peugeot’s offside suspension may have contributed to the collision.
The Peugeot driver Petar Ristic said in evidence he was travelling at between 50 and 60mph. Near to the Anchor pub bridge, he swerved and braked to try and avoid Mr Timmins, but his car went sideways and hit him.
Expressing his condolences to members of Mr Timmins’ family, the coroner told them: “He would not have suffered. It would have been very, very quick.”
He said his verdict “neither blames nor absolves anyone” for what happened.
