A NEW exhibition will tell the story of the two sides of Worcester in the 18th century.
Prospect of Worcester – The Tale of an Eighteenth Century City, being shown at Worcester city art gallery and museum, will chart the city’s history from the Battle of Worcester to the birth of the Victorian city.
It will show both the wealth of the city – but also the growing urban poverty. The exhibition takes its inspiration from an oil painting called A Prospect of Worcester From the East.
However, the story will be told not only through art, but also by pieces from the archaeology and social history collections.
Debbie Fox, one of the curators of the exhibition, said: “Worcester was changing in 1750 from a city traumatised by civil war to the city that we recognise today. This painting offers a fascinating snapshot of Worcester in transition.”
The exhibition runs from tomorrow until Saturday, July 17. Worcester city art gallery is in the library, Foregate Street, and is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Entry is free.
