Career fair is ‘really useful’

THE Worcester News Jobs and Careers fair has been hailed a great success.

The majority of the 850 people who walked through the doors of the Guildhall, High Street, Worcester, said they had found the event to be incredibly useful.

The annual event, now in its ninth year, was a great comfort to many given the economic difficulties of the past year, with both companies and the University of Worcester on hand to offer free advice and information.

Many people who attended yesterday found the set-up very useful, especially those looking to find work in the social care sector.

James Bourton, aged 32, of The Limes, Kempsey, near Worcester, said: “I saw about it in the Worcester News this morning. I’m out of work at the moment, but I’m interested in social care, especially Mencap, so it’s been really useful for me. I’ve also been put down for a job by another company so it was worth it.”

Mark Spragg, 28, of Fairmount Road, Brickfields, Worcester, said: “I’m trying to find another job or a career, or help to get more qualifications. I’ve found it really helpful. I’ve spoken to four or five of the different set-ups and I’ve gained quite a lot of knowledge. I’ve got a lot out of it.”

Jo Fitz-Hugh, 28, of Sharman Road, Barbourne, Worcester, said: “I’m looking for a new job after I was made redundant last February. There’s plenty of things here as hopefully I want to go into the care sector. I saw the event advertised in the Worcester News and saw that there were three stalls here specialising in social work and care that I wanted to come and see.”

But Andrew Tucker-Martin, 38, of St Moritz Close, Northwick, Worcester, who had been made redundant about a year ago, was left a little disappointed in his pursuit for a job in construction or engineering. “There’s only been one company that’s good for me and they don’t have any jobs at the moment,” he said.

Overall, though, the day was a success. Organiser Richard Hencher, Worcester News recruitment manager, said: “All of the exhibitors have received many enquiries which will hopefully lead to them filling any vacancies they may have.”
