Let’s salute Armed Forces supporters

THE unsung heroes of Worcestershire who supported British servicemen and women could be honoured with a new award.

The Royal British Legion is recognising the hard work of people who go the extra mile for the UK’s serving and former soldiers, sailors and airforce personnel.

The legion’s county branch chief is now asking for nominations for people in the city and wider Worcestershire for the first Friends of the Forces awards.

Jeff King, county branch chairman, said: “The awards are open to all – individuals of all ages, groups large and small, charities, schools, colleges and businesses of all sizes. These awards are a chance for the county’s residents and the nation to say thank you to those who have upheld the promise to its British Armed Forces.

“It goes without saying we fully expect to recognise the contribution made by the legion’s own members as well.”

Councillor Andy Roberts, Mayor of Worcester, said: “Not everybody can serve on the frontline but we have got heroes within our city working to support those who have put themselves at risk and served this country.

“These awards are aimed at honouring and recognising them.”

The county’s nominees may then feature in the Midlands regional awards, with several regional winners announced.

They will go forward to the national awards due to be held in London on Tuesday, July 13.

Would-be nominees may have volunteered to help or advise service personnel or their families, supported or organised fund-raising ev-ents, or arranged a welcome home party.

Categories for nominations are people aged 17 and under, individuals, charities and voluntary groups, and businesses. To nominate your unsung hero, visit friendsof theforcesawards.org or call 08457 725725.
