Mountain biker airlifted after fall

A MOUNTAIN biker has been airlifted to hospital after falling from his bike and hitting his head on a tree.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Castlemorton, near Malvern, shortly after 11.30am on Sunday.

An ambulance, a medical responder and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were dispatched to the scene. The fire service was also in attendance.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “On arrival at the scene crews found a mountain biker who had fallen from his bike and is believed to have hit his head on a tree branch.

"The man, believed to be in his late 30’s, was treated on scene for a neck injury. He was given pain relief at the scene and immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board.

“Due to the location of the incident a specialist team from the fire service assisted the crew to transfer the patient from the hillside to the ambulance.

“The ambulance crew conveyed the patient to the Air Ambulance who airlifted the patient to Worcestershire Royal Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Being a mountain biker myself, I'd have been interested to know if he was wearing a helmet at the time or not?

Helmets do work in the right situation but I have clonked my head on low branches because the helmet peak stops you judging where they are properly, neck injury ensues.. looks like this might have happened here.
You have to be pretty unlucky to get a serious head injury on a bike, kerbs and cars are the usual culprits I think, trees and rocks sometimes.
You are more likely to get a head injury in a car accident I think, most bike crashes seem to involve collar bones and wrists from by painful experiences.

pudniw-gib - Don't I just know it! I'm sure that my medical records have a whole folder full of x-rays from my various run-ins with tree stumps and rocks during my time racing downhill! Not to mention the odd encounter with peoples car doors when they just open them as I'm riding past!
