Anger over 'mean' sheltered housing TV theft

THE theft of a television from sheltered housing in Worcester has been described as “mean” and “despicable” by a local councillor.

The television was taken from the communal area of Brookthorpe Close sheltered accommodation, off Cranham Drive, Warndon, between 3.30pm and 6.15pm on Saturday, March 6.

The 42-inch LCD television was used by all the residents – who are aged between 59 and 92 – who live in the flats at Brookthorpe Close.

Resident Susan Rogers, aged 61, said: “We cannot have our film shows or watch football matches or anything like that now.

“It’s really shocked us all. It went out in daylight. It’s something we just weren’t expecting.”

Local councillor Jo Hodges was disgusted by the theft. She said: “I think it’s a very mean and despicable act. To take a television from something like sheltered housing, where that television may provide – for some – the only entertainment they have, is awful.

“A theft like this is almost worse than a burglary from a domestic dwelling. I think there is a moral duty for people to say something if they know where this television is.”

A police spokesman said: “I would describe this as a callous and uncaring crime against elderly and vulnerable people. We would urge the person or people who have taken it to think again about they have done.”

Police are asking anyone who believes they have seen a television fitting the description to contact them on 0300 3333000, quoting crime reference number 679S/060310.

Targeting the communal areas of sheltered accommodation scheams, must be the in thing for the scumbags who do this, ours went missing some time ago from Cranham Court, never to be replaced

What a disgusting thing to do. No doubt they are insured but that is no consolation for them after having someone come in broad daylight and take this TV. I would imagine that the security has been tightened following this but what a sad state of affairs when people in such a place can't enjoy their lives due to some vile individual invading their home.

A sad reflection of the society we have created for ourselves.
May I suggest that they replace it with a large CRT old style TV.
The picture quality is better.
These are very cheap to buy secondhand (people give them away)
Even if the scum wanted to nick it they are largely so work shy they would not be able to pick it up!

All the more reason to retain wardens in sheltered units. I wonder if there was one here.

In reply to pudniw-gib,
Not sure about retained wardens at Brookthorpe Close, but if its like Cranham Court, the answer is No, wardens on site as and when they can get here, a diffrent one every day, we are just tucked away by WCH, to be forgotton about

Well said Baldrick, as you are aware the Worcestershire Pensioners Action Group have long campaigned against the taking away of on-site wardens, we have been on the streets and in the post offices and shops and collected many thousands of signatures from the people including the younger generation who think that to deprive older people of their support, which includes the meals from Extra Care (as Chelmsford Court) Sheltered Homes, is nothing less than disgracefull. We have the support of Sheltered Housing UK, and with the splendid legal work that solicitor Yvonne Hossacks is successfully acheiving, it might be that Housing Associations such as WCH may well be required to re-instate the on-site wardens. And of course this will also apply to those Housing Associations who are considereing taking away on-site wardens. This is what we are fighting for, and have taken our cause to No 10 Downing Street, where we met a cross party delegation of politicians, and handed our petition in.
So our fight goes on
