Pedal power will boost city tourism

RICKSHAWS could soon be riding along the banks of the Severn in Worcester as part of plans to boost tourism.

The pedicabs, which would carry a maximum of three passengers, could even be fitted with an audio commentary system to explain the history and significance of tourist attractions, such as the cathedral.

The idea is that about four privately financed pedicabs – similar to those that have been in operation in Hereford for three years – would run on a looped 2.39 mile circuit between the main Worcester Bridge and the new £2 million foot and cycle bridge, currently under construction, linking Diglis and Lower Wick The proposed cost of a ride in a pedicab, which would have seatbelts, rain covers, storage and space for advertising, has not yet been decided.

Marcus Sparrow of PediTours said: “We believe this is exciting and innovative and will bring tourism into the city. We think it will contribute to that sector and will make better use of the riverside and connecting people with places.”

After Mr Sparrow’s PediTours presentation to the licensing committee at the Guildhall on Tuesday, some concerns were raised about the safety of pedestrians and other cyclists if they use the same designated foot and cycle routes as the pedicabs.

However, the presentation showed that initial responses from Worcestershire County Council, as the highways authority, and West Mercia Police indicated neither had any objections to the scheme in principal.

Georgia Smith, head of tourism body VisitWorcester, has also indicated support for the idea, although she has asked for more details about the routes, how pedicabs and pedestrians will mix on all sections of the circuit, and what content would be included in the audio tour.

Councillor Keith Burton said while he thought it was a “great idea” he wondered whether pedicabs might be better served as a tourist attraction by taking people around the centre of Worcester rather than just along the riverside.

Councillor Mike Layland, also supportive of the idea, said more work needed to be done before a full proposal comes before the licensing committee - due on Tuesday, June 15.

Mr Sparrow, in charge of technical sales for mobile advertising company PediAds, is also a planning officer but Worcester City Council has agreed to allow him to carry out his self-employed work in his own time at his own expense.

Great, every other city that’s lucky enough to have a river running through the middle, maximises its use, finally Worcester city council are doing this with the river front receiving a total revamp to include lighting etc. I think this new venture will compliment the new riverside well, and also if it does prove popular then it can be extended to run through the city centre as well. I like the idea a lot well done.

Looking at the route and the width of these Pedicabs I can see some issue around the Diglis Basin area. These Pedicabs look like they wouldn't get over the canal swing bridge. Also could they get along some of the narrower stretches of the footpaths. MrStJohns I agree with you Worcester needs to do more with the river. Amongst boaters for instance this city has a dreadful reputation.

Great idea. The council just need to make sure (as mentioned above) that the paths are adequate - not just for the pedicabs but for other path users too.

What a great idea! Let's hope that this venture gets the backing and support it needs. I'd like to see them available around the city as an alternative to a taxi, what a great way of getting from one end of the city centre to the other.

I really like the idea of this, but wouldn't fancy being the poor 'cabbie' especially given the size of some of the American Tourists I have seen trudging around the Cathedral, I think carrying one would be an acheivement but three would be impossible!

True, raq some of the tourist are a little hefty. However think of it this way, the person driving the cab is going to have the wonderful outdoors to enjoy along with getting some serious fitness training in while being paid.

Yep - I'll be very interested to see what the wages are like because I've been racing mountain bikes for 15 years, and it seems like a great way for someone like me to earn a little bit of pocket money!

Great idea - can't wait to see the new revamped riverside. I have lived in Worcester for 20 years and have always thought that a lot more could be done to bring in tourists.

Why on earth as a tourist would you want to Diglis - To look at the Bridge? There is nothing there but housing and industrial units, and there's not much more in lower wick either, or are they seriously thinking that the people in those areas will use this an an alternative form of transport into the city?

As long as they aren't allowed on the road, causing traffic flow problems, bloody good luck to them

DarrenM has a point, it's hardly a tour of Worcester's history round the grim Diglis tower blocks, and the west river bank is just a river bank, nice, but not much history there.

At least there will be a good cycle route into Worcester from that side of the river. It's just a shame that the newly laid canal path from Diglis to Sixways is such a botch job.

Mr St Johns your comments are too measured, are you Mr or Councellor of St Johns? Is this part of the Worcester transport stratergy, or is it to try to make the new foot bridge more acceptable? Get this right. The walk along the river past the Cathedral is one of the nicest walks in Worcester, it dosnt need fixing. The ferry crossing in the summer does great work for chanity and gets folks to the other side of the river, the pleasure boats that ply up up and down gives the absolute best view of that area. So why the fuss about 4 tacky ricksaws?? because someone needs to justify the construction of the foodbridge, and there is a lot more expense to come with a new elevated footpath to the bridge(because of flooding) and lighting.
Tulstar who are you trying to fool hinting that it will add jobs and extra cash, Mountain bike? Rickshaw?smoke and mirrors gents. Darren M, Biggles, Saturn - looks like you have your doubts and your comments are well valid and stand out from the earlier ones. Rickshaws - Worcester no probs, dont use it to justify a new bridge...when the bridge is opened perhaps the dignitaries can walk up the lane and have tea and biscuits in the garden??

Oh Keeneye, I wish you'd read my comments properly before deciding to have a pop. I'm not trying to fool anybody - I merely said that I (as in ME PERSONALLY) would be very interested to see what the wages were like for one of the riders, because if they came to Worcester, it's something which I would very much like to do, as cycling is my main hobby anyway besides rugby, and I think it would be a great way to earn some extra cash over the weekends and evenings.
.
As for your comments about whether or not the purpose of them is to make the bridge more acceptable - I agree that the ferry does a good job in the summer and I've used it a few times myself.
.
However it is not there for the rest of the year, and personally I would really like to see a footbridge at Diglis, as I regularly go for walks along the river, and would use it to cross from one side to the other, to make a loop. I think it will be a great addition. And no, I don't work for the council.

These kind of jobs will go to students. We get all exited about rickshaws and scoop that poop when Worcester desrves better. One great attraction: the fountains on South Quay had its budget cut, in the early stages and the whole thing was downsized, we have got to stop thinking like that if we want to attract people to Worcester, we need to get excited about bigger things than rickshaws.
