COMMENT: Well done to everyone who has helped

NO doubt many of our readers will have watched last night’s Sport Relief telethon on the BBC.

The biannual charity event raised more than £28 million in 2008 and is on course to beat that record this year.

Thankfully, Sport Relief is about much more than the celebfest that filled our television screens last night.

Thousands of Worcestershire people will be staging events for the fund-raiser today and tomorrow with many sponsored to run or walk a mile at a series of venues across the county.

While the various fund-raising efforts of sports stars and television celebrities make the headlines, it is the efforts of hundreds of thousands of ordinary people that make events such as Sport Relief so successful.

Today we tip our hat to you if you are doing something to raise money for street children, malaria sufferers or UK-based projects – the three main destinations for Sport Relief cash.

Even in tough economic times the people of Britain can always be relied upon to dig deep to help people less fortunate than themselves.

We see it time and again, whether in response to disasters like the Haiti earthquake, television events like Sport Relief, or in the many donations made to local charities.

Everyone who gives, no matter how small or insignificant the donation might seem, should be proud of themselves.
