Building bridges: Work gets under way on foot and cycle link

THE building of Worcester’s new cycle and foot bridge is under way.

The Diglis Bridge will link Lower Wick to just south of Diglis Island, connecting cycling and walking paths on either side of the river.

Building officially started last November.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: “Construction of the Diglis Bridge has begun. The eastern bank foundations are under way and construction of the foundations on the western bank will start this week.

“We are currently awaiting an updated schedule of works from our contractors, which will give us an accurate overview of how the project is progressing.”

The bridge, which is costing more than £2 million to build, is due to be completed this summer.

Residents can check the progress and pictures of the bridge work at worcester shire.gov.uk/connect2.

It will be interesting to see who is pictured at the opening of this bridge Will it be coucillors or dignatries from Warndon or Dines Green, or Barbourne? Who will get the best PR out of this? It is misleading to say it will benefit the people who live in St Johns, (the proper St Johns area), they will walk or cycle along the New Road into town, to say it will be attract tourists, I doubt, the people who should be using it will be folks from Lowerwick, and not just the few who cycle anyway. Will it change peoples habits, do they really want to walk or cycle with bags of shopping, or is a drive to Sainsbury's St Johns or Morrisons Malvern still a better option? Has anyone worked out the distance and time it will save by using this bridge, I think its nice weve got another bridge but in these times of cutbacks could the money have not been better spent on something that would benefit the wider population, I dont see the justification for this. Sorry

This is no pedestrian/cycling bridge as the head down lycra louts will, as usual, indimidate and bully other users off their, lets race against time, new route.
A complete waste of money to pander to a small but influential cycling minority that disregard others rights and the law of the land.
Will the bridge allow a division between cyclists and pedestrians, I don't think so?

The County Council have not yet legally changed the status of connecting footpaths into byways, allowing cycling, they are therefore encouraging cyclists to break the law but will no doubt be there in the forefront when this folly is opened.
When was the last prosecution of a local cyclist riding on pavements, running red lights and behaving in an anti-social manner?

It's amazing how an incident sticks in the mind isn't it? No doubt the above commenter sees a cyclist do something reckless now and then and tars every cyclist in the land with the same brush.
When was the last time you or anyone you know hit by a bicycle? and no, being frightened when one comes within 5 yards of you doesn't count.
Yet another hysterical anti-cyclist.

pedestrian - I'm very glad that you've stated that the "lycra louts" as you call them are fortunately a minority.
.
I'm a cyclist myself. Do I use footpaths? Yes.
.
Do I dismount when passing walkers/other footpath users? Yes, if there is not plenty of room to ride around.
.
Do I ride on pavements? Yes, because in some places I would MUCH rather suffer the comments from the occasional pedestrian than suffer a head injury or worse from an incompetent motorist. And yes, I do wear a helmet - I'm actually on my third one. My other 2 have been broken when I've been knocked off by cars!
.
Do I behave in an anti-social manner? Yes, but only when some complete **** gets too close when I'm riding on the road, cuts me up, pulls out infront of me or knocks me off. And then the anti social behaviour is directed solely at them.
.
I think the bridge is a great idea. All they need now is another little one up by the Camp at Grimley. That would make for a perfect loop!

Tulstar I applaud you for the courtesy you show other footpath users.
Most regular cyclists are very considerate. And yes sometimes it is much safer to cycle on the footpath, I have no problems with that, a very common sight in Amsterdam, the cycles ring their bell when they come up behind folks. We can accommodate each other on the footpaths I am sure. Who will use this bridge, is yet to be seen, I have my doubts. As for a bridge at Grimley: another 2 million, and the rest. The Councillors’ at Grimley do not have any weight at all.

keeneye - my comment about a bridge in Grimley was a little tongue-in-cheek! It would just mean that my walk up to The Camp in summer would be a loop rather than walking back along the same path!
.
Perhaps I'll get myself a little boat, and charge people 50p to get across from the Camp to the other side :-)

Why not walk up to the end of pitchcroft to Morrisons boat yard and hire a boat and row to the camp.
Its a great evening out.
I thought the bridge over Diglis was a bit tongue in cheek and look what happened.

keeneye - I did actually go to do that last summer. It seemed a bit expensive though! Especially as when I usually go up to The Camp I tend to stay there for the majority of the afternoon/evening.
.
Plus I'm not sure how much I'd want to row back after taking generous amounts of Thatchers Gold onboard! Out of interest though, can you remember how long you hired the boat for and how much it cost you?

You can strike a deal with the guy, take the boat late afternoon / early evening and just tie it up and leave it when you get back. I forget the cost, a bit of a novelty evening out really.
