GARDENERS who have helped a village to bloom for a quarter of a century celebrated the silver jubilee of their horticultural society by planting a silver birch tree to mark the milestone.
The tree was planted and a commemorative plaque installed behind the village hall in Hallow on Saturday.
The ceremony took place on the day of the society’s spring show.
Bill Barratt, who has been secretary for the past 20 years, said: “There are people who have been in the club for 25 years and they’re still around, and I have been here for nearly that amount of time.
“It’s part of village life, having the show. We are also quite involved with the Hallow school, particularly during our autumn show.”
David Caldicott, president and founder of the society, said membership had fluctuated over the years but had always been high – there are currently 90 members registered.
He said: “It has always been a very strong society with a good committee to arrange everything. Flower and vegetable shows are a tradition in this country and we’re keeping that tradition going.”
