Traffic hold-ups on city roads

JAMMED: Newtown Road this morning JAMMED: Newtown Road this morning

DRIVERS on main roads into Worcester have been caught in rush hour queues after gas works began.

Motorists have been crawling along Newtown Road, in Worcester, after National Grid engineers started work in Tolladine Road at the start of the week.

The roadworks are also having a knock-on effect in London Road, and the A4440 southern link road where there were lengthy queues after 8am.

amazes me the buffoonery that allows such road closures surely it would have been easier on all to stagger the work on one side of road in 100 metre stages.or is that old chestnut of health and safety to come into this ridiculous road closure for so long.

What this story doesn't say is that the closure will be UNTIL OCTOBER. More traffic chaos after nearly a year of hold-ups in the St Martin's Gate area.

How about a sensible solution to relieving the congestion? But is that beyond the comprehension or intelligence of those who've 'organised' this mess? More than likely!

It should be the county council`s highways department!!

There is no doubt that the works need doing and although National Grid cannot be stopped from carrying out works on the road, unless there is a very vaild reason, it is down to the highways department to manage and co-ordinate roadworks and approve applications to carry out such works.

If the council done their job properly, and actually cared about the disruption caused to motorists and businesses, these works would be carried in a better way and in a shorter time too. But as the council has given them 4 months, there is no pressusre on National Grid while the guys on Tolladine Road are only doing what they have been approved to do.

I`ve had need to contact the council before about roadworks elsewhere, so anyone with a complaint should contact the highway department`s roadworks team at County Hall or the highway liaison engineers to find out why their department is, frankly, hopeless in managing the road network full stop!!

Or go for the jugular by trying the boss of the department, the Head of Integrated Transport, or even go above him to the Director of Environmental Services. I`m sure either of them will gladly NOT take any responsibility!

I think the best solution would be to stop having all those silly underground pipes delivering all that water and gas to houses, not to mention that useless electricity that comes through those wires as well. And while we're at it, let's get rid of all those sewers too. it was much better when we used to just throw our poo and wee out onto the street.
Everyone would be able to get around much easier if these things didn't need fixing or upgrading every now and then.

Looking at all the new bus routes, unecessary traffic lights and roadworks, it seems the Council only have one objective - To make the motorists life hell, so that they all surrender to the wonderful local public transport...
