AN out-of-this-world day of stars and solar systems saw visitor numbers rocket at Droitwich library.

Close to 1,600 people of all ages landed at the Victoria Square library on Saturday for a day of inter-galactic activities and talks.

Visitors dressed as their favourite space-themed characters, ready to build their own rockets with help from Black Knights, a West Midlands-based hobby rocket flying club, and rocket modelling champion Stuart Lodge.

Youngsters acted out the Mars landing and discovered the secrets of the universe with rocket scientists, astronomers and authors who travelled from all over the country.

Two guest talks, exploring the realities and practicalities of human space travel and the advancement of space travel in human society, were sold out.

Jackie Passey, library manager, said plans were already afoot for next year’s Space Day.

“It’s just been phenomenal,” she said.

“We’ve had everyone from a 94-year-old who worked at Somerfield research station in Kidderminster to two-year-olds.”
