"Wherever there's an Asda cost of living goes down"

RESPONSIBILITY: Richard Kennea, the general manager of the new Worcester Asda store RESPONSIBILITY: Richard Kennea, the general manager of the new Worcester Asda store

MOST of the staff have been appointed, the fixtures are being fitted and anticipation is building as the opening of Worcester’s first Asda superstore edges closer.

Customers will not have to wait too much longer though as the new supermarket in Lowesmoor will be opening its doors to the public at 10am on Monday, March 26.

With the opening date looming, the man in charge has admitted there is a lot of pressure on him to make sure Asda is a success in the city.

Richard Kennea, the store’s general manager, said: “I need to get it right. It’s a massive responsibility but I always look at the positives around that.

“Worcester is what we refer to as an Asda desert so I’m excited about bringing Asda to a place that previously hasn’t had one and to really get involved with the local community.”

Mr Kennea, aged 44, of Kingswinford, West Midlands, is in his ninth year with Asda.

He has experience of opening a new store as he was the man in charge when Asda set up shop in Halesowen about three years ago.

He said he had been overwhelmed by the response from the public – not least by the fact that about 3,800 people applied for about 300 jobs.

“I have been humbled really,” he said. “The majority of applications have been from local people but we did have a man get the train up from London.

"That was amazing, but is very much the exception rather than the rule. It’s local jobs for local people.”

Asda is the anchor of the £75 million redevelopment of Lowesmoor, where other shops, restaurants and leisure facilities are expected to open up in due course.

Mr Kennea said he thought Worcester’s shopping scene was already very good.

He said: “As a shopper I have always enjoyed Worcester but what Asda will bring is more choice, simple as that.

“We know that wherever we open a store, we drive down the cost of living.”

Local primary schools are already involved in creating a jingle that will be played on radio in the week after Asda opens in Worcester.

On the day there will be a breakfast roadshow, entertainment and food samples.

Across Easter weekend staff will be staging the Asda Price Guarantee gameshow which will raise money for St Richard’s Hospice.

Surprises in store

• It will be a 41,000 square foot store.

• About 270 people will be employed permanently while about 40 will be taken on temporarily. Depending on the store’s success, many of those could gain permanent employment.

• As well as selling food, the store will stock George clothing and electrical goods.

• The supermarket will also contain a tapas bar, a photo centre and a pharmacy while coffee retailer Costa will have a café in store.

• Bosses will not get the keys until Friday, March 16, giving staff 10 days to fully stock the shelves.

• That will require 14 artic lorries and, once complete, about 30,000 products will be on sale in store.

Its great to have Asda setting up in Worcester I just wonder how shoppers will cope in travelling by car to and from the shop. The traffic in the area is bad now whats it going to be like when more shoppers try and travel to and from it!

Having spent a small fortune in Tesco for frankly appalling quality fruit and veg and pretty much no useful offers, I can't wait for Asda to start taking some of their business away!

Can't wait, I love the George range of clothes, the food is excellent quality and cheaper than Tesco.

If I'm honest I worry about smaller businesses in the face of another supermarket opening, but they are here whether we all like it or not. As such, Asda opening and providing more choice can only be a good thing. More jobs, more choice. Perhaps those responsible for the Tesco stores in Worcester will now appoint some Managers who understand what Customer Service and good value are. The St. Peters store in particular has been a scandal for years. Long queues, sullen staff, poorly stocked shelves. I and many people I knew refuse to shop there. Asda could be the kick up the backside that is needed - Good Luck to them and all who are newly employed there!

The Fruit and veg at tesco is so poor it goes off after 2-3 days.

Why are people going on about rubbish fruit & veg at Tesco when there are excellent local shops selling it fresh out of the fields for a fraction of the price?
Anyone that buys the imported trash offered by Tesco deserves what they get.

Good point Maggie. A fair few farm shops in the area, so a good opportunity to buy local produce. We are lucky.

Well said Maggie. Local shops selling local food means good fresh food.
Also the money you spend stays in the local community which is much better for the local economy.

Asda being cheap, well not in latest polls in the National Newspapers they came low down the list well below Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury, Tesco and Morrison. But at least we shoppers will enjoy the forthcoming price wars between the super Stores, and yes Maggie the vegetables in most supermarkets have traveled up and down the country on the back of the lorries from the Farms to their distribution depots then back on the lorries to the stores, so can be several days old when you buy them. So go and shop locally nothing better than freshly cut salad stuff, and real spuds with dirt on, and fresh seasonal greens, not sent from Nigeria.
The experts say that mainly we are better off buying frozen veg than so-called fresh veg from the supermarkets.

Just what Worcester needs, another quaint little local supermarket. I went shopping the other day and the other 8 or 9 in Worcester had sold out of everything

Pity Asda couldn't of squeezed a carvery into their restaurant there. Asda's meat is the best meat available from a supermarket, the beef roasting joint they were advertising at Christmas was top notch, had all of the fat trimmed off it :)

What is happening with the parking? I've seen they are building a car park, i'm assuming it's going to be some sort of pay & display or 'token at checkout' as otherwise it will be full of people that are not wanting to pay the cost of the car park across the road (as Aldi is often used for).

Not that you will be able to get in between 4-6pm as the roads will be blocked solid :P

Now all we need is for Asda to find somewhere to put a Petrol station, then we can look forward to not being ripped off on out fuel too. (Maybe when Aldi crumbles under the competition they could use that site)

I think you will be waiting a long time. The Aldi Store has to be among the busiest per square meter in this City, it has almost everything for selective shoppers, a good range of products, and really good friendly staff. they will still be getting my business.
As to Petrol Worcester has less petrol stations now, due to the fact that the privateers couldn't compete with the nationals and supermarkets. But despite this I would be really sad if we lot the Aldi store just for a couple of pence off petrol.

Re the price of Fuel in Worcester this deserves a column all of it's own,was hoping that ASDA would have installed a fuel station just to bring much needed competiton in the area

Surprising that ASDA didn't go for a fuel station, still, they do have automated standalone fuel stations in parts of the country so I wouldn't eliminate the possibility that they'll build one in Worcester. We can hope!

Apart from Newtown Road most of the principal roads in and out of Worcester has a Petrol Station . Many Years ago there was a petrol Station and garage at the bottom of Newtown Road by the Gun Tavern, a Mr Cullis was the owner. But if they (Asda) bring cheaper petrol then that would be excellent.
Might even have the support of Robin Walker when the planning permission was applied for.!!!

Can I raise the most important issue of all, brown sauce. Since Kraft purchased HP Sauce they altered the recipe to suit the American taste, and it is now much sweeter without the bite that always gave that breakfast thrill.

I searched for over a year and found the closest to the old HP taste is Branson brown sauce. But can I buy it in Worcester? No!! I can't buy it anywhere in Worcester, and I have to import it from the north.

Now, with Asda opening up in Worcester the brown sauce lovers amongst us have an opportunity of buying something to satisfy the long-lost taste that Kraft now deprive us from.

\Welcome to Worcester ASDA!
