A DISABLED man from Evesham has called for better access on public transport for wheelchair users.

Steven Sumpter, aged 33, from Badsey, Evesham, says he has often been faced with embarrassing and stressful situations such as being carried off trains when ramps are unavailable, despite pre-booking the service.

He is now asking for more awareness from companies when dealing with disabled passengers.

Mr Sumpter, who suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, said: “I personally use a lot of public transport and I have had a lot of problems, but it is much wider than just me.”

He said the most common problem is getting on and off the trains, even though he has to book it 24 hours in advance and arrive 30 minutes before the journey.

“When you have to be carried off the train it is quite embarrassing and the last straw,” he said.

Mr Sumpter’s call comes as A2BForAll, a disability campaigning group, released new research showing disabled people across the country are being forced off public transport because of the high levels of discrimination they face.
