A DRIVER had to be cut out of the wreckage of his car after he was involved in a collision with a HGV in Droitwich.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, suffered a serious cut to his leg in the smash yesterday morning.

He was in a critical but stable condition yesterday evening at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he was taken by ambulance.

His grey Citroen C3 car and the HGV, owned by Droitwich-based haulage firm the Reality Group, collided at about 6.45am on Friday morning outside the Copcut Elm pub on the Worcester Road.

The circumstances of the crash are not yet known. Three rapid response vehicles attended the smash alongside a paramedic area support officer, a land ambulance crew and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, on board which was a doctor.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The car driver was assessed at the scene by the air ambulance doctor prior to and after his removal from the car. He had a bad leg injury. His leg wounds were dressed and he was taken by land ambulance to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further assessment and treatment.”

The driver of the HGV was not seriously injured.

The A38 was closed in both directions between the B4090 Worcester Road and Martin Hussingtree roundabout and re-opened at 1.03pm, more than six hours later.

Another accident just a few hundred yards up the road near the Berry Hill Industrial Estate on the Droitwich Road added to delays in the area.

No one was injured in the second crash, which happened at about 9.15am, between a green Rover and red Seat.
