Vital appeal gets boost

A CHARITABLE group from Worcester whose members toured the city at Christmas with Santa Claus and his sleigh have given £1,000 to our Noah's Ark appeal.

The Worcester Lions Club was helped by the Girl Guides in last year's festive quest to bring a smile to people and, at the same time, raise vital funds.

The group, which collects money for many local causes, was able to give the Noah's Ark Trust a cut of the money it raised, together with Leukaemia CARE, St Richard's Hospice and the Girl Guides.

Lions Club member Joy Haffner said: "We are aware that several local charities including Noah's Ark are very reliant on donations made to them.

"Worcester Lions Club raises most of its funds from the local community and we see it as very important to support worthwhile local causes that are reliant on donations for their funding."

Mrs Haffner, together with her husband Ian, who is also the club's president, both attended Noah's Ark's 10th anniversary reception earlier in the year and were impressed by the work done by the Lowesmoor-based charity.

At the event, the couple were able to find out more about the charity's 'Towards a Brighter Future' appeal, in which it is trying to raise funds or find a property for which it can pay a peppercorn rent to provide a safe and secure base for families to visit and use its services.

Mrs Haffner said: "It seems a superb idea to provide this kind of emotional support to children and their families.

"This support may have been provided by a family unit in past years, but so often these days families are spread far and wide and cannot always provide the support which is so badly needed."

The Worcester Lions meet on the first and third Tuesday of the month.
