THIS WEEK IN 1959:
FROM Berrow’s Jottings column: The Courtesy campaign launched by the Midland Red Bus Company this week is commendable.
Personally, I have always found the drivers and conductors on our city and county buses to lack nothing in this regard. It has surprised me to see how thoughtful and tolerant they could be in the most trying circumstances. Theirs is by no means an easy job. It must be very tiring at peak periods and effort must be required on their part to avoid displaying irritability.
“Treat your passengers as your guests” is one of the Courtesy campaign slogans and it is up to us as the “guests” to behave correctly in the “sitting room” of the bus.
THIS WEEK IN 1969:
ANOTHER of Worcester’s pressing needs looks as if it will be gratified within a few years. The Ministry of Transport has given approval for the construction of a second bridge over the Severn, together with approach roads. The bridge scheme, costing £3½ million, will take at least 12 months to design and may not be completed until 1975, but it has been universally welcomed in the city. It is proposed to construct the bridge, with long approach viaducts, across the river from Pitchcroft to Hylton Road.
● Rumours that Roger Moore, better known as TV hero The Saint, had bought the 400 year-old black and white Cop Castle at Bringsty, near Bromyard, have now been scotched.
The rumours have been circulating in the area for months but Mr and Mrs J Tombs, current owners of Cop Castle, stress that while the property is still up for sale, there have been no approaches whatsoever from Mr Moore.
THIS WEEK IN 1979:
RESIDENTS and visitors to Droitwich searching for a satisfying but quick meal need look no further than St Andrew’s Street from next Monday when Mr Lawrence Spears opens the Hamburger House.
Like so many ideas which have crossed the Atlantic, the hamburger is expected to find an enthusiastic welcome in Droitwich.
Lawrence Spears is no stranger to the Spa having lived in Droitwich for 10 years, during the last eight of which he has been an ice cream vendor. Along with hamburgers and cheeseburgers, ice cream will still be on the menu at Mr Spears’ new premises, together with steaks and salads.
● The potential of the extensive land and buildings of Norton Barracks for industry, sport and leisure development is currently being investigated jointly by the Worcester City and Wychavon District councils. Wychavon, in whose area Norton Barracks stands, has nothing against industrial development but is opposed to housing on the land as it would have the effect of expanding Worcester to the south east rather than out at Warndon.
THIS WEEK IN 1989:
WORCESTER’S new £350,000 ambulance station in Spetchley Road was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of the county, Thomas Dunne. The new station, created from the shell of a former garage, replaces the old Deansway ambulance station which was demolished earlier in the year. The Worcester branch of the British Heart Foundation made the day extra special by presenting a second £5,000 defibralator and heart monitor to the local Ambulance Service.
