UPTON folk turned out in force to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

People braved the unseasonal weather to take part and watch a carnival parade before a big street party on Saturday.

Harriet Gittins of the organising committee said: "All in all, it was a really fun and memorable day enjoyed by the whole community. All the hard work and efforts of everybody involved really paid off.

"We would like to thank all the local businesses and organisations who supported and provided sponsorship towards the day, with a special mention to our main sponsors Sanctuary Care and Allan Morris Estate Agents."

The day started off with the church bells being rung, followed by a grand opening by Harriett Baldwin MP.

The carnival parade through the town centre was led by Scots pipers in full regalia, and featured a selection of classic and vintage vehicles. Rescue group MISAR provided the marshalling for the procession.

This was followed by a street party birthday tea, organised by the Hot Peppers WI and Upton Business Association, with cakes for all the children sitting at long tables with balloons and Union Jack flags.

The Rubies and Britain's Got Talent winners Pippa and Buddy provided musical entertainment, and the day also featured a dog show, a bake-off competition, fun and games for children and much more.

The carnival king and queen were Tom Radford and Faith Barlow, with Patricia Popescue and Owen Moore as the princess and prince. The flower girls were Maisie Quinn and Liliah Jenner.

The carnival winners were Upton on Severn Primary School for the best motorised float and Pendock Primary School for the best walking entry.

The St Richards Hospice shop won the window-dressing competition, with Panes Garage second and Louise James Florist third.

In the dog show, run by Stocks Vets and Pawfection, the best in show was Paddy, a five-year-old Newfoundland owned Julia Pugh, and the agility winner was Tilly the labrador, owned by Rob Davis, who completed the course in 46 seconds.

And the winners of the bake-off competition were Kerry Laughton McCannon and Flora Gittins.

Mrs Baldwin said: "It was great to see so many people enjoying the celebrations and it was an honour to open the fete on the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday.

"We are so lucky in this country to have such a wonderful Queen and Upton turned out in huge numbers to show their appreciation of Her Majesty.

"I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who helped organise this great occasion, which I am sure will be fondly remembered by everyone who attended."
