AN event marking the centenary of the First World War is being held in Rubery this Monday, August 4.

The Rubery branch of the Royal British Legion are taking part in the poignant nationwide event Lights Out, in which everyone involved will turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm.

After switching lights off, participants are being encouraged to leave only a single light or candle on.

The event has been organised to mark the 100th anniversary of the date Great Britain entered the war.

Visitors to the Rubery event are being encouraged to bring along their own candle, or a special Centenary Candle available from Mark & Spencer stores, with profits from all sales supporting serving members of the Armed Forces.

Everyone is invited to take part in Rubery branch's event, being held at the legion's memorial garden at its headquarters in New Road.
