A £2 million refurbishment and extension of dining facilities at a town school is underway.

Construction company Stepnell has been appointed to carry out the £2.85 million project at Bromsgrove School, in Worcester Road.

Designed by Robothams Architects, the scheme will be transforming the present dining hall to create a contemporary food hall catering for 1,400 students each day at the boarding school.

As well as a modern food hall and new staff dining facilities, the project will create a brand new kitchen housed in one of three extensions to the current building.

The existing single-storey dining hall will be extended on its north, east and south sides and is being designed to offer a welcoming environment for school diners and visitors.

The single-storey extensions, with facades in brick, glass and stone, are designed to be contemporary but not to the detriment of the historic surroundings.

Each extension will have an eco-friendly roof reducing rainwater run-off and minimising the visual impact of the building.

The dining hall is remaining open during the construction work, which is set for completion in August 2015.

Stepnell is also working at Bromsgrove School on a separate project to build £3 million new residential accommodation facilities for the school's sixth form boarding house, Housman Hall.

Stepnell’s West Midlands construction director Alan Lyons said: “We’re delighted to be continuing our highly successful working relationship with Bromsgrove School.

"This is a major project which will create a cutting-edge kitchen and stunning new dining hall facility where students and staff can enjoy eating and socialising in a stylish and comfortable environment.”
