A BROMSGROVE arts centre is joining forces with a charity to offer stroke survivors the chance to be part of a new scheme.

The companion card is being issued to members of the Life After Stroke Centre, in Church Lane, and will entitle cardholders to bring their companion with them to films and selected events.

Stroke survivor and cardholder Steve Wright, 59 from Redditch, was one of the first people to trial the companion card.

"Artrix offers a varied programme of films and events throughout the month," he said.

"The staff were extremely friendly and helpful when I visited.

"To be able to take someone with you to the cinema is not only helpful, but enjoyable. I hadn’t been to the pictures in years, but had a fantastic day out - I look forward to going again."

A spokesman from the Artrix said: "Artrix is truly a place for everyone and I think it’s important that we support those who may find it difficult to access our programme without the help of a companion or carer.

"Reducing feelings of isolation and helping people affected by stroke to engage in their community can have a positive impact on their wellbeing."

Bernice Jones, regional head of operations at the Life after Stroke Centre said: "We’re delighted that Artrix are offering such a unique and kind scheme to stroke survivors in the area.

"In the West Midlands there are over 11,000 people who have a stroke every year, and over 120,000 people are living with the effects of stroke.

"A stroke happens in an instant but its effects can last a lifetime.

"For many stroke survivors having the option to take a cinema buddy or a companion to the cinema will make a huge difference. Thanks to businesses in the community like Artrix, we can work together to conquer stroke."
