A PEDMORE school will be one of the schools across the UK who will be taking part and tuning into the biggest first aid lesson ever.

Pedmore CE Primary School has signed up to St John Ambulance’s Big First Aid Lesson, taking place on June 12, which aims to teach pupils vital skills that could save lives.

The national first aid charity is now urging more schools in the Black Country to join the lesson.

Mr Dunn, headteacher, said: “We think this is a fantastic opportunity for all children to gain a basic understanding of first aid, giving them the confidence and knowledge to possibly save someone’s life.”

A free, one hour first aid lesson is being filmed live and streamed directly into classrooms across the country. It will combine first aid training and 999 scenarios with real life stories, as well as opportunities for students to join the conversation via Google Hangouts.

TV presenter Claudia Winkleman, who will be hosting the event, said: “The Big First Aid Lesson is a fantastic and engaging way of teaching students the skills they may need to help keep a classmate or a family member safe in an emergency while they’re out on the playground or during the holidays.

“All schools should make teaching young people basic first aid a top priority.”

The only equipment schools need to take part is an internet connection and a screen for their pupils to watch in the classroom or during an assembly.

Nick Pitt, regional schools training co-ordinator for St John Ambulance, said: “We’re asking teachers to commit just one hour of their timetables to our event so every student can learn how to save a life. It could be the most important lesson they ever learn.”

Last year, more than 32,000 young people tuned into the first Big First Aid Lesson and schools which register for this year’s event are also being encouraged to watch last year’s session to get to grips with skills.
