UPDATE:

THE main road bridge across the Severn at Worcester had to be closed for about an hour this morning while police persuaded a man not to jump in the river.

The man was spotted by a member of the public who called the police at 8.12am.

The man was on the wrong side of the bridge parapet and threatening to jump in the river.

A uniformed officer was promptly sent out to the scene, followed by a trained negotiator.

The bridge was closed to traffic to allow the negotiator to talk to the man in private, and an ambulance and rescue boats were also sent to the scene.

The negotiator persuaded the man to come away from the edge of the bridge, and the road was subsequently reopened at 9.14am.

POLICE, ambulances and the fire service closed off Worcester Bridge this morning.

The bridge has now reopened following the police incident.

Rescue boats were also believed to have been called to the bridge at just before 9am this morning.

The bridge reopened about an hour later.
